Day 6: la salita alla cima Art vs Fashion: Duomo di Milano

Looking at Art beyond its history and relating it to other subjects, such as fashion is a great way to completely understand an interpretation of designers as well as artists.

The two images above exemplify intricate detail in the complete opposite texture and format, but with the same style and design.  One is current and trendy, the other is ancient and historical.

ART :
The first image to the left is a close up of one of the many arches in the Duomo.  Of the 3,400 statues that are carved on the Mariae Nascenti which is the Duomo of Milan, I chose this specific detail and related it to fashion.  It specifically is the arch of the very top step, right before entering the "roof" of the cathedral. The Duomo cathedral was first commissioned in 1386, by Gian Galeazzo Visconti and was not finished until the early 1800's (with centuries of modification, including current day 2011).  This, as well as every single sculpture surrounding the cathedral is breathtaking of the detail and perfection, making it look almost unreal.  It can easily be assumed that the designer for this dress (Duvos) was inspired by the exterior of the Duomo, just by analyzing the comparisons.

vs.

FASHION:
I specifically used this dress pictured above, because before even looking at my pictures I uploaded from my adventure to the top of Duomo, it immediately reminded me of the intricate design carvings I saw today; it also helped the decision that I loved the dress myself.    The dress was designed by a Spaniard designer Duvos, for Fall/Winter 2011.  This dress is a "bitmap" designs, as described by stylesight, which is a specific type of graphic composed of pixels, which are seen inside the circle of the dress.  The correlation between these two works of art both demonstrate clean and precise circles as the main focus of the design, with surrounding shapes and graphics as a minimal focus.

As our first Art vs fashion assignment I really began to understand the meaning and importance of why we are doing this assignment.   Visual Merchandising is what I plan on utilizing my Fashion Merchandising major in and attention to detail is key to being successful.   Having this assignment in mind while climbing the top of duomo really put my skill in this area into use.  As we proceed into more Art vs Fashion assignments I think I will not only improve but have a more in depth vision of Italian culture and art; as well as inspiration in fashion design.
